The Principality of Monaco is an international cultural centre, situated on the Mediterranean in a bay just before the border of France and Italy. As a result of its climate, annual international events (Formula 1 Grand Prix among others) and famous casino which attract tourists throughout the year it has a well-developed network of services to tourists. There are many different types of accommodation, appropriate to different sorts of holidays and budgets.
Hotels
Monaco offers a large number of hotels for tourists and has a number of four star luxury hotels including the Hotel Hermitage, built by Gustave Eiffel. The hotels are classified for tourism as follows:
Chambres d'Hôtes (B&B's)When vacationing in Monaco, it is also convenient to stay in a Bed & Breakfast (Chambres d'Hôtes) on the French Riviera. These Chambres d'Hôtes vary from room rental in a private house to well organised, professionally run guesthouses.
Holiday Apartments and Gîtes de FranceMany tourists in Monaco choose to stay on the French Riviera in self-catering or more rural accommodation available in the hills surrounding the Principality. Originally rustic farmhouse accommodation, the Fédération Nationale des Gîtes de France has evolved over the years to include Bed & Breakfast type accommodation and self-catering facilities, outside of the big cities. To date, the organisation represents 38,000 owners, 55,000 addresses and 30 million days of holidaymaking. High standards are maintained and one can generally be guaranteed quality facilities from a Gîtes de France member. Gîtes de France provides "formulae" of varying types of accommodation under the following headings:

There are many other privately managed hostels, particularly in the city centres of the French Riviera (Nice and Cannes). The Tourist Offices (where there is almost always an English speaker) will be able to give a list of addresses and a map, or make calls for a reservation upon arrival in a town. Where possible, it is advisable to find out if it is possible to reserve a bed in advance, especially during the summer season from May to September (however, be aware that many hostels don't take reservations).
