Buying & Selling a Vehicle in Monaco

Information on the immatriculation - a vehicle's registration paperwork with details on how to go about buying or selling a vehicle in Monegasque registered vehicle in the Principality.

The immatriculation is a vehicle's registration. The details of a vehicle's registration are carried in the Certificat d'Immatriculation (registration certificate).

When a Monegasque car is bought or sold, the new ownership must be registered within one month of the transfer and a new Certificat d'Immatriculation will be issued to the new owner. Paperwork is handled by the Service des Titres de Circulation.

The Certificat d'Immatriculation should be carried in the car at all times.

Buying & Registering a Used Car

Before agreeing to buy a used car:

  • Make sure that the series number stamped on the car matches that in the registration documents of the seller
  • Make sure that the seller is the legally registered owner of the car by checking on the Certificat d'Immatriculation

Documents required to register a car:

  • Proof of identity: passport, Monaco identity card or Carte de Séjour.
  • Monaco driving license
  • Proof of insurance document
  • The Certificat d'Immatriculation (registration certificate)
  • The number plate(s)
  • Cars over four years old must have a vehicle roadworthiness certificate (Contrôle Technique) from a test taken at most six months earlier. (The roadworthiness test must be taken by the Centre de Contrôle Technique des Véhicules de Monaco)
Selling a Used Car

The following must be sent to the Service des Titres de Circulation:

  • Form STC/020 for the sale or relinquishment of a second hand vehicle, Certificat de vente ou de cession d'un véhicule d'occasion
  • The Certificat d'Immatriculation
  • If the car is more than four years old, a certificate as proof of roadworthiness (Contrôle Technique) no more than six months old
  • The number plate(s) if the vehicle is sold outside Monaco
Duplicate Certificat d'Immatriculation (Loss or Theft)

Documents needed in the case of loss:

  • Declaration of loss and replacement request form STC/040 (Déclaration de perte et Demande de duplicata) available from the Service des Titres de Circulation and completed and returned there

Documents needed in the case of theft:

  • Declaration of loss form (déclaration de vol) available from the Sureté Public, completed and sent to the Service des Titres de Circulation.
Change of Address

Changing an address on a driver's licence or immatriculation can be done in one office within the Municipality.

Destruction of the Vehicle

Notification must be made of a car to be scrapped (whether by the owner or after sale to a scrapper). The following documents must be provided to the Service des Titres de Circulation:

  • A vehicle destruction request (Demande de Destruction d'un Véhicule) form STC/021
  • The registration certificate
  • The number plates

In the case of destruction following an accident:

  • A copy of the insurance report
